2021.5 Mazda CX-5

The original 2021 Mazda CX-5 set new standards in the compact crossover market, mixing a luxurious interior with plenty of punch under the hood to deliver a high-end driving experience at an attractively affordable price. And even though the model won widespread praise and posted high sales figures, Mazda decided not to stop there and has released a mid-year update to add even more features. The result is the 2021.5 Mazda CX-5, and here are the key highlights you can expect to discover with a test drive from our Surrey dealership.

Enhanced Infotainment

The most immediately visible improvement enjoyed by the 2021.5 Mazda CX-5 is in its infotainment section. The older 7" display has been replaced by an impressive 10.3" unit as standard across the range, while the software behind it has also been upgraded to the latest version to include voice commands as well as button and dial operation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard for seamless linking of smartphones, with even more capabilities offered by the Mazda Connected Services suite. This system allows control of a slew of vehicle functions via a dedicated smartphone app, and adds a Wi-Fi hotspot facility into the bargain.

Under the Hood

However, the newest CX-5 retains the same advanced engineering under the hood to deliver a high-end drive. As standard, the powertrain is built around a 2.5L gas engine making 187 horsepower and 186lb-ft of torque, producing snappy acceleration from a standing start for a drive that feels powerful and confident. The output is passed to front-wheel or all-wheel drive through a six-speed automatic transmission, with an optional manual shift mode for a more hands-on driving feel.

But if you need a little more oomph, the high-end trims upgrade the engine to a 2.5L turbo model, pushing the power up to an impressive 227 hp and 310lb-ft, which is by any standards an ample amount for a compact crossover.

Fuel Economy

One of the great benefits of the compact crossover format is the excellent fuel economy figures that can be obtained, and the CX-5 is a fine example of this. The regular engines boast a highway rating of just 7.9L / 100km, backed up by a city score of 9.8L. But even the turbo models are pleasingly frugal, with a rating of 8.7L on the highway and 10.8L in the city.

Advanced Safety and Driver Assist

The second major area where the 2021.5 model has been upgraded is in the safety and driver assist technologies. All models now feature the full set of options as standard, with highlights including:

- Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection.
- Lane departure warnings with lane keep assist.
- Adaptive cruise control.
- Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts.
- Advanced head-up display.
